AdvocacyImagine
you wake up one morning and find out that most of your rights as a
citizen are taken away. Some
of these freedoms might include right to employment, pursuing your
education, or choosing a place to live.
People with disabilities are often denied these basic rights. Each
of us, as well as the organizations we affiliate with, spend a
considerable time advocating about an issue.
But we miss out on an opportunity to network, join forces and
collaborate in a unified effort.
In
order for each of us to achieve our goals, we must unite as one large
collective taskforce, and advocate for our rights and our shared
vision of equality. Advocacy
is the tool we use when we want our views spread throughout the
community. Advocacy can
take many forms. You can
make phone calls, write letters to a legislator; or you can
participate by helping to organize a rally or testifying with us at a
public forum. Currently,
there are three advocacy initiatives being pursued by the Alliance.
We believe that these initiatives are another tool that will
empower and enlighten people about the issues that are of importance
to them. The three
initiatives are the MiCASSA
Coalition, the Strategic
Council, and the Transportation Task
Force.
Click on each of the links, familiarize yourself with the
issues, and explore how you can become involved. Another
feature of our Advocacy Web Site is our Legislative Update. There will be postings every month on pending
legislation that affects you. Click
and educate yourself so that you can be an effective advocate. Together
we must work to promote the integration and inclusion of all people
with disabilities into all aspects of our communities.
Equality, justice, empowerment, dignity, independence, rights,
choice, should not just be buzzwords; they should be integral
components of the policies and issues we propose and support. To find out how you can work with us, please e-mail advocacy@adacil.org.
