Who We Are
The Alliance for Disabled in Action (ADA), Inc. is a private not-for-profit Center for Independent Living, located in Edison, New Jersey USA and serves the counties of Union, Middlesex and Somerset. A Center for Independent Living (CIL) is not a place where people with disabilities live; it is a dynamic membership organization run by people with disabilities for people with disabilities.

The Alliance is one of a growing number of Centers for Independent Living. Currently there are 12 CILs in New Jersey and over 400 hundred CILs in the United States. CILs have also been established in many countries around the world.
The Alliance provides information & referral, peer support, advocacy and Independent Living Skill training to people with all disabilities of all ages to increase their independence in all aspects of integrated community life. We respond to their families, businesses, and governments to enable them to better meet the needs of people with disabilities. We educate and influence our community in pursuit of full inclusion.
People with disabilities should be empowered to control the direction of their own lives. This means choosing their goals, plotting their course and taking responsibility for their actions and results. People with disabilities have the right to make their own choices and decisions and the right to make mistakes and learn/benefit from those mistakes. Centers for Independent Living foster independence, facilitate the development of networks and supports. and promote self-reliance. CILs advocate for the inclusion and integration of people with disabilities in all aspects of community living.

The Alliance's Mission Statement drives our commitment to Independent Living:
The Alliance for Disabled in Action, Inc. is a Center for Independent Living whose mission is to support and promote choice, self-direction and independent living in the lives of people with disabilities, with the right of individuals to inclusion in the community as our primary goal.
The Alliance for Disabled in Action, through its Board of Trustees, staff members and affiliations, assumes a leadership role in the development and sharing of innovative projects and activities which supports the philosophy of Independent Living for all persons with disabilities.
