TRANSPORTATION TASK FORCE

The Alliance's Transportation Task Force addresses issues concerning transportation for people with disabilities. The Task Force is a diverse group of individuals representing all levels of our organization who have experienced frustration with the existing options and means for transportation.  It is actively pursuing resolution of some of the difficulties experienced in utilizing county paratransit systems and public mass transit.

A major accomplishment of the Task Force is the Paratransit Consumers Bill Of Rights and Responsibilities, which states that consumers of county paratransit systems should be treated with respect during delivery of transportation service. Likewise consumers who utilize county paratransit systems should abide by the rules, policies, and other responsibilities, for example, calling immediately if a ride needs to be cancelled.

After securing approval of the Paratransit Bill Of Rights and Responsibilities by Commissions for Persons with Disabilities in Middlesex, Union, and Somerset Counties, the Transportation Task Force will bring it to other Centers for Independent Living so that they can present it to commissions for persons with disabilities and paratransit systems in their respective counties.

The Paratransit Consumers Bill Of Rights and Responsibilities will then be presented to the legislators of New Jersey for approval as a proclamation.

Recently, consumers had an opportunity to participate in a forum sponsored by the Task Force where they made recommendations regarding new policies implemented by the Middlesex County paratransit system.

The Transportation Task Force meets once a month at the Alliance Office.  If you are interested in coming to a meeting or need further information on the Transportation Task Force, please contact Advocacy/Outreach Coordinator, Anita Clavering at advocacy@adacil.org
