Representatives from ACI's Advocacy Group recently met with Edison Township's Mayor Tom Lankey and Administrator Melissa Perilstein. Topics discussed were inaccessibility of some the of town's streets and sidewalks, enforcement of the snow removal law and housing. Thank you Mayor Lankey and Ms. Perilstein.
In recognition of National Voter Registration Day, ACI sponsored a workshop, entitled "Voters Rights for People with Disabilities," presented by Mary Ciccone, Esq, of Disability Rights New Jersey. In addition, Seth Stevenson from the Middlesex County Board of Elections demonstrated one of the county's accessible voting machines. "This was very informative, I will feel very confident the next time I vote," said Cheryl Schweitzer, one of the attendees.
Last Wednesday, ACI's Social Rec group enjoyed a workshop on printmaking taught by The Printmaking Center of New Jersey.
Traveling instructor, Greta Anderson, showed us many different techniques, such as still life and abstract pieces. The class then created their own colorful masterpieces by using a device called a roving press.
Roll Call Wheelchair Dance invites one and all to participate in a dance flash mob at the 5th annual NJ Disability Pride Parade in Trenton!
The flash mob will be dancing to the song Happy by Pharrell Williams. Feel free to join the line dance at ANY point in the song!
Disability rights activists from around New Jersey, including groups representing parents of people with disabilities, will be holding a demonstration on the steps of the Statehouse in Trenton on September 10, 2015. Demonstrators are protesting over recent statements by Princeton University Professor Peter Singer, promoting ending the lives of disabled infants through denial of health care. Organizers are calling on the Princeton University, as well as Governor Christie, a trustee of the school, to publicly denounce Singer’s and take other steps to address what the activists describe as Singer’s “hate speech” toward disabled people.
“Since about 1980, Singer has promoted public policy that would legalize the killing of disabled infants in the first month of life,” said Stephen Drake, Not Dead Yet’s research analyst and expert on Singer. “More recently, he has expanded his position in the context of health care rationing.”
Members of the ACI Advocacy Group met today to compose letters to the editor in opposition to Professor Peter Singer of Princeton University. ACI is working with other disability and civil rights organizations to hold a protest against Singer and Princeton University on Thursday, September 10th at 12 Noon on the steps of the NJ State House in Trenton.
